When I first moved back home to Chicago from Los Angeles, it struck me that the presence of naturally curly hair was so few and far in between. I saw protective styles, I saw wigs and weave and of course I saw relaxed hair. Why? Because urban metropolitan areas like Chicago and Detroit were targeted by the beauty industry to keep unnatural hair products in the forefront.
I was 12 months into transitioning natural when I moved back and it really saddened me to realize that brown and black girls in Chicago didn't have an avenue to embrace their natural curls. I chopped off my relaxed ends after 18 months of transitioning and had been working on my own oils and creams to strengthen and grow my hair.
Women from all different backgrounds were asking me how I achieved my curl pattern and I would explain my regimen. I quickly fell in love with the educational aspect of natural waves, curls and coils. I stumbled into Chi Town Naturals from making mixtures for my own thick, kinky hair.
With the help of my own experiences, I hope to educate and encourage brown and black women and men in areas like Chicago with natural hair. With Chi Town Naturals, I hope we can protect, strengthen and grow the curls that have been suppressed for so long!
